Lake Ōkaro is a significant taonga (treasure) to the Ngati Whaoa and Ngati Tahu tribes. The reserve is accessible from Waimangu Road from the north, and Ōkaro Road from the south.
Surrounded by farms, the lake has poor water quality but is safe for recreational activities including rainbow trout fishing and waterskiing. Fishing is best in winter when there is a lower chance of algal blooms.
The lake is also home to the grey teal, paradise shelduck and dabchick.
There is an easy 2.5km track around the edge of the lake. The walk includes short boardwalk sections and lovely wetland views.
