Citizenship ceremonies in Rotorua

In Rotorua, citizenship ceremonies are held in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre, 1061 Haupapa Street.

Ceremonies last around two hours, from 1.30pm - 3.30pm. Candidates are advised to arrive 30 minutes before to ensure you are seated on time and are required to stay for the ceremony's entire duration.

An afternoon tea will be served at the citizenship ceremony.

Becoming a New Zealand citizen

Applications to become a New Zealand citizen must be made to the Department of Internal Affairs. You can find information on this process in the Citizenship section of the govt.nz website or by phoning them on 0800 22 51 51.

After your application is accepted, the Department of Internal Affairs will send you an invitation to attend your ceremony at Rotorua Lakes Council approximately three weeks before the event. The next ceremony date is shown above.

If you're unable to attend

If you can't attend the ceremony you’re invited to, you need to contact Department of Internal Affairs as soon as possible. Go to their site for what to do if you cannot attend your ceremony.

Who can attend a ceremony

Ceremonies are invitation only events.

Candidates are invited to bring a maximum of 2 guests (per family) as there is limited seating available in the Council Chamber where the event is held.

You must RSVP for your guests according to the timeframe and information listed on the letter you receive from the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

What to bring to your citizenship ceremony

Please bring the invitation letter from DIA (printed or electronically) and a photo ID to the ceremony.

Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the ceremony to ensure you are seated on time.
