Love Your Place - Summer in Rotorua
Love your place this summer! If you're heading out to make awesome memories in Rotorua, check this essential guide to what's on, things to do with kids, being kind to your kurī, staying safe while you swim, and important dates for holiday Council services.
Let's all play our part to keep our community safe, protect the environment and keep services running smoothly.
Keep Rotorua tidy
Treasure our outside places by always taking your rubbish home with you. Call us any time on 07 348 4199 if you:
- Have questions or concerns about rubbish/recycling collections
- See illegal dumping, an overflowing bin or litter
- See toilets in our reserves that need maintenance.
Holiday rubbish and recycling
There is no rubbish/recycling collection on Christmas Day (Wednesday). All collections for that week move one day later from Thursday onward. Check your street's rubbish and recycling dates below.
Alcohol ban areas
We have year-round 24/7 alcohol bans - public places where you can't drink alcohol - in place in Rotorua. Get familiar with the Alcohol Ban Bylaw to make sure you have fun responsibly this summer.
Fires and fireworks
Don't light without checking it's alright! Fires and fireworks are banned in our park and lake reserves. Did you know that lots of our reserves have free barbecues you can use?
If you're celebrating with fireworks, check the rules and always be considerate of your neighbours.
Noise complaints
Please have fun responsibly and be considerate of your neighbours. If someone near you is partying a bit too much this summer, call our Noise Control team on 07 348 4199 to make a noise complaint.
Be kind to your kurī
Where to walk your dog
Dogs aren't allowed in the CBD, even on a leash. If you're taking your pooch out and about this summer, check the list of places you can exercise your dog on and off leash.
Keep our outdoor spaces clean by always picking up your dog's poop.
Dog safety in the heat
Walk your pooch early morning or later in the evening, watch out for hot surfaces and always have fresh water and shade available. Never leave your dog in a hot car.
Animal Control
If you need to call Animal Control about dog attacks, dogs rushing at people, roaming or injured dogs, and wandering livestock, our animal control staff are on call 24 hours a day to respond, even over summer. Phone 07 348 4199.

Water and swim safe tips
Pool safety
Keep little ones safe near pools, inflatable pools and paddling pools by always supervising and emptying when they're not in use. Check your swimming pool's safety and compliance.
Swimming at the beach or lake
Before you swim, check out these safety and health resources:
- Tips for survival - Water Safety NZ
- Where to swim - Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA)
- Check for algal blooms - Health Warnings | Toi Te Ora Public Health
- Help stop the spread of freshwater golden clams.
Be a safe boatie
Stay safe on the water and know the rules about boating in the bay (boprc.govt.nz).
Conserve water
Summer usually brings higher water usage, which has a big impact on the city's infrastructure and environment. You can help conserve water by:
- Keeping lawns longer to retain more water
- Watering lawns or gardens using a hand-held hose during cooler hours of the day
- Not leaving sprinklers on for long periods of time
- Using a watering can instead of a hose to water your garden.
If you see a water leak or other water/wastewater issue, contact us 24/7 on 07 348 4199.
