Subject: LGOIMA request - library shelving staff
I refer to your LGOIMA request of 13 July 2023 regarding library volunteers trained in shelving, and provide the following responses to your questions:
1. Are these volunteers doing tasks which are normally done by paid staff?
Yes paid staff shelve books, however we are not replacing a staff member by using a volunteer. The work of volunteers supports what paid staff do and enables them to focus on more skilled aspects of their job. This is a common strategy in libraries to ensure members of our community who may not be able to work can contribute as much or as little time as they like to their community in a way that is meaningful for them. This also provides the opportunity for people to continue on the path of life long learning, which is a primary goal of the library sector.
2. Is the library staff Trade Union aware of this strategy?
Yes the Union is aware of this.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this response/decision.
