Subject: LGOIMA - Art Collection
I refer to your Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act request of 27 October 2021 regarding art work owned by council and subsidiaries.
Please find below information on the collections held in the Rotorua museum collection, and community public art.
Museum collection
- The total number of artworks owned: 2490
- The total value of artworks owned: $10,700,123
- The number of those artworks:
- on public display (public does not include council buildings, unless that building is explicitly a gallery or museum): 2
- displayed in council buildings (excluding galleries and museums): 2
- in storage: 2486
- A percentage breakdown of the origins of the collection: approximately 55% gifted, 45% purchased, less than 1% commissioned
- The value and description of the most valuable item: We have a number of significant art pieces. We decline to identify individual pieces on security grounds.
Community public art
- The total number of artworks owned: 123
- The total value of artworks owned: $9,062,000
- The number of those artworks:
- on public display (public does not include council buildings, unless that building is explicitly a gallery or museum): 116
- displayed in council buildings (excluding galleries and museums): 7
- in storage: 0
- A percentage breakdown of the origins of the collection: approximately 60% commissioned, 15% purchased, 25% gifted
- The value and description of the most valuable item: Te Ahi Tupua – 12m high carbon fibre composite sculpture - $1.2m
