Subject: LGOIMA request - hazardous substance waste at Rotorua Landfill
I refer to your email of 5 June 2019 requesting procedures and policies in respect of disposal of hazardous substance waste at the Rotorua Landfill site.
Please find attached the Rotorua Lakes Council's 2006 Landfill Management Plan incorporating the Hazardous Waste Store Management Plan and Refuse Transfer Stations Management Plan.
Since 2016 the Rotorua Landfill had been managed by Waste Management. I attach a copy of Waste Management's 2017 Rotorua Landfill Management Plan incorporate a Refuse Transfer Station.
We are unable to find any reference to the disposal of two large steel containers of 1080 and other hazardous substances from nearby forestry land at the Rotorua Landfill between 2006 and 2008.
For your information capping of the Rotorua Landfill has recently been completed (photo attached) and Council wastes are now transported to Tirohia Landfill. Council does not accept hazardous waste at the transfer station.
As per the Act, we are obliged to advise that you may contact the Ombudsman at the address below if you have any concerns with the response provided by Council, by writing to:
