Subject: TRIM: LGOIMA request - Crankworx
I refer to your email of 13 July 2018 requesting the following information on Crankworx:
- How much Rotorua Lakes Council spent on Crankworx each year.Council provides a grant of $75,000 per year and underwrites the event. Council does not cover any further costs or pay any further grants.The underwrite is up to $500,000 spread across the 2015-2021 years. The underwrite called upon in 2015 was $94,000 and in 2016 was $39,000. The underwrite was not called upon for the 2017 or 2018 events.
- How much Rotorua Lakes Council made on Crankworx each year. Council does not 'make' anything from Crankworx as it is not the event organiser. Crankworx Rotorua is run in conjunction with Crankworx Events Inc (the Canadian owners of the event), local organiser Tak Mutu and not-for-profit company Mountain Bike Events Ltd (MBE) (a joint venture between Rotorua Lakes Council, Skyline Rotorua and Tak Mutu). This joint venture was established in October 2014. However, the economic impact to Rotorua has been around $4m for every year the event has been held.
- The overall cost of the event and how much of this was covered by council, sponsorship, grants etc.As noted above, Council provides a grant of $75,000 per year and underwrites the event.
With regard your queries around;
- Breakdown of spending eg: advertising
- Breakdown of revenue eg: ticket sales
- Detail of sponsorship/grants etc
- Number of people who attended the event
Council does not hold this information. As noted above, MBE are the event organisers and this information is held by them. I have, however, attached the Post Event Wrap Reports for 2015, 2016 and 2017 from MBE for your information. The 2018 report has not yet been approved by the MBE Board, however if you would like to contact MBE this report can be provided once approved.
