Topic: Damage Kawaha Point jetty
Enquiry
Received an email from someone over the weekend saying a group of youths vandalised the jetty at the Kawaha Point reserve on Friday evening at about 7.50pm, police called at 8.
"Smashing dozens of planks, ripping them out, throwing some in the lake and running off with others."
Is this a council maintained jetty?
Is the council aware of an issue?
What details does the council have on the matter?
Will the jetty be repaired and if so what is the likely cost and timeline?
How often does vandalism on jetties happen?
Are the vandals known or being looked for?
How old is the jetty?
Any comment on the matter?
Response
Mr Kouwenhoven emailed Rotorua Lakes Council on Friday evening regarding youths damaging the jetty. He has been informed that Rotorua Lakes Council does not administer lake structures, that this is done by Bay of Plenty Regional Council and that Rotorua Lakes Council does not carry out repairs on privately owned lake structures.
For your understanding/knowledge, Bay of Plenty Regional Council is the consenting authority for jetties, both public and private. The regional council may have more information for you.

Topic: JB Hi-Fi store opening in Rotorua
Enquiry
I'm writing a story about JB Hi-Fi opening a store in Rotorua Central on Friday, creating 30 new jobs.
I am seeking some comment from Mayor Tapsell on what this says business confidence in Rotorua and the impact on the local economy?
Response
From Rotorua Mayor, Tania Tapsell:
“This is such great news for Rotorua, especially as this new business brings more jobs.
“Seeing a big brand like JB Hi-Fi set up shop in Rotorua is definitely another positive step in the right direction for our town and local economy.
“This is a real example of how business confidence has been growing in Rotorua, which we know is the case based on positive responses to recent surveys from the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and RotoruaNZ.
“We look forward to their offering as we head into a busy summer holiday season.
“And we wish JB Hi-Fi all the best as they open their doors for the first time in Rotorua.”

Topic: Hole in Te Ngae Road
Enquiry
NOTE: The following enquiry refers to a hole that appeared in Te Ngae Road near and on the same side as Pak n Save:
received the below from NZTA on the Te Ngae Rd hole situaiton (given it's a SH)
Yes NZTA is aware that a small sinkhole (tomo) has formed on SH30A just before Pak n Save. The lane was closed last night to protect the area. There are a number of reasons why holes like this appear. Can be caused by erosion from water – or by geothermal activity in this area. Rotorua Lakes District Council used a camera yesterday afternoon to check the stormwater pipe, identifying that the pipe is intact and in good condition.
NZTA contractors will be fixing the tomo today/tomorrow and rebuilding the road pavement.
Just wanting to check the comment on council finding the pipe as intact and safe is accurate?
And if there were any pics from the cam checking it would also be amazing if possible!
Response
We confirmed the information provided by NZTA regarding the stormwater pipe was correct.
We informed the reporter that we could not provide footage as RLC did not record the footage from the camera that inspected the pipe.
