Enquiry
I am writing a story regarding the cancellation of a number of Anzac Commemorations around the country in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks.
Could you please let me know if Rotorua's Anzac services will be going ahead as per usual and, if yes, what has been planned for 2019.
Response
From Arts and Culture Manager Stewart Brown:
We have no plans at this time to cancel the service or the march. Our team are liaising with the local police in regards to security requirements for the event.
It is understandable that people are wary of large gatherings following the tragic events in Christchurch last month however the safety of guests and attendees is our number one priority and we will continue to work with police to manage risks before and during the event.
The details of the day's events are still being finalised however the services will follow the same format as previous years:
- Dawn service at Ohinemutu
- 9am - Public march from Memorial Gate to the Sportsdrome
- 9.30 - 10.30am - Civic Service at the Sportsdrome
The Field of Remembrance will also be in place in the Government Gardens at the Cenotaph from 17 April.
Information:
The Dawn Service is organised by the Te Arawa Maori Returned Services League Inc. You may need to go directly to them if you want any specifics on what they have organised.
