Enquiry
The tree has been given protected status, which under the district plan, means it restricts it removal or destruction unless it poses a danger to human safety or is dead. In light of that, could you tell me:
Was the tree either flagged as a danger to human safety? Or was it certified, or close to being certified as dead?
Did the tree specialist raise concerns that the tree could pose a danger?
Does the council consider the braces and branch reduction were enough to make sure it was safe?
And, please could the council provide us with a copy of the tree specialist's report - or at the very least, their observations and recommendations.
With an investigation being carried out, are you able to confirm whether the council's handling of the concerns around the tree are forming part of that investigation?
Response
Please see below from Rotorua Lakes Council Acting CE Craig Tiriana, further to yesterday's statement:
This was a tragic accident and there will need to be a thorough investigation carried out by the appropriate authorities.
In light of the fact there will be an investigation there is nothing further to add at this time.
