Topic: Oil/diesel spill on Hamurana Road
Enquiry
We've heard there has been an oil spill in Hamurana. Is there anyone on call in council we can ask about the spill? We've spoken to police and they told us council has been asked to clean it up.
On the road. On east bound lane Hamurana Road between Unsworth road and SH33. Police were there for traffic management.
Response
The following information was provided:
See below some information regarding oil/diesel spill along state highway and road between Ngongotaha roundabout and Mourea (if you need to attribute it can be attributed to 'a Council spokesperson'):
- RLC received a call from a member of the public and a call from police, both just before 10am today, to report a possible oil or diesel spill
- Council's roading contractor Fulton Hogan was contacted and they (Fulton Hogan) also contacted NZTA's Rotorua contractor, Higgins (some of the road through Ngongotaha and Hamurana is state highway and the rest is local rural road)
- Fulton Hogan reported that they found some trails of oil or diesel on the local road portion (from Tauranga Direct Rd to Mourea), however it was not a serious amount, not enough (and road too wet) to sweep but they put up some 'slippery surface' signs on a couple of corners
- They said Higgins didn't find anything serious along the state highway portion
