Topic: Health conference held in Rotorua
Enquiry
Reporter sought comment from Mayor Chadwick regarding a health conference held in Rotorua last week:
I know she mentioned the excitement about the healthy city opportunity so wondering if she could comment on why that excites her?
Response
From Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick:
Rotorua Lakes Council is a signatory to the UN Global Compact - Cities Programme which has a focus on sustainability and wellbeing in the broader sense and which incorporates health and wellbeing-related goals like those that feature in the Healthy Cities initiative.
We signed up to the UN Global Compact programme because it fitted perfectly with the goals and aspirations Council and the community set as part of the 2030 vision around sustainability, wellbeing and community resilience. We will see if there is anything Healthy Cities has that we've missed.
With their focus on sustainable societies, programmes like UN Global Compact and Healthy Cities are another way to help cities and districts like ours achieve our long-term goals and aspirations by keeping us focussed on what's important for our communities and our people, now and into the future.
There were presentations during the conference of the Rotorua Lakes Council/Lakes District Health Board Te Aka Mauri (library and child health hub) collaboration and the Rotorua Lakes Council/Toi Te Ora Outdoor Public Smokefree Spaces programme.

Topic: World Haemophilia Day
Enquiry
As you know World Haemophilia Day is this Wednesday and a whole bunch of spots around the city are being lit up to raise awareness.
I am wondering if we could get comment from the appropriate person on why council were happy to become involved with the day and why they think it is important to raise awareness?
Response
From Rotorua Lakes Council's inner city manager Richard Horn:
Council was approached by the Haemophilia Foundation of New Zealand to light the city red for World Haemophilia Day on Wednesday (17 April) and was more than happy to do so to help raise awareness.
It was also a way to welcome those who are attending the foundation's national family camp in Rotorua to our city, and we understand they are planning a bit of an inner city tour to take in the lights.
The following, which will be lit up red, are all routinely lit up and we have the ability to change the colours so you will see, for example, blue lighting for Men's Health Month in June and pink lighting for Breast Cancer Awareness in October.
1) Te Manawa, Intersection of Tutanekai and Hinemoa Streets
2) Night Market overhead lights, block between Pukuatua Street and Haupapa Street
3) Eat street, block between Pukaki Street and Whakaue Street
4) Clock tower, corner Arawa and Fenton Street
5) Main Council building, observed from the Hinemaru street side
6) Main archway into the Government gardens, Intersection of Arawa and Hinemaru street
7) All going well the Museum will also be lit up ... our contractors are currently working on this.
