Topic: Geothermal hole at Ohinemutu
Enquiry
I understand a geothermal pool has appeared on Ohinemutu lakefront. I was wondering if council have been made aware of this, and if so what action is being taken?
When was this reported to council and is it considered a risk to the public?
Follow up info/query
Just wanted to provide some more information. A resident says the ground was steaming and muddy for weeks but now a deep pool has appeared. There are also other sections on the lakefront which are muddy and steaming. Residents are concerned these will also turn into geothermal pools.
Is there concern this problem will continue or escalate in Rotorua - given the other incidents similar to this that have taken place in Rotorua recently?

Response
The reporter was informed that council hadn’t been alerted to this pool and we asked if she was able to provide a photo or a more specific location.
After receiving the attached photo, we confirmed council had not been alerted to the pool but would now assess it and see if any action was required.
Council’s Geothermal Inspector - Peter Brownbridge provided the following comment:
“From looking at the photos provided, it appears a pool has emerged in an area of reclaimed land at Te Ruapeka Bay. This wouldn’t be an uncommon occurrence, as the area is well known for its geothermal activity and features. The pool may require fencing and people should be cautious when in the area.”
