Topic: Lake Road fumerole
Enquiry
Could I please have an update on the fumarole?
GNS said it appeared to be an infrastructure failure of a local geothermal bore.
- What is the state of the road this morning? Is there still water and mud on the road?
- What work on the site is the council doing this morning?
- Is the fumarole still putting out water and mud? If so, when is this likely to happen?
- Has a cause been found yet? Is it linked to a bore? How will it be fixed?
- Has the fumarole grown since yesterday?
- Any other comments are welcome.
Subsequent from reporter:
Heaps of cars drove through the area so just wanted to put together some advice for motorists.
- What would the water, steam and mud likely do to a vehicle if it wasn't cleaned following driving through it?
- Why is this?
- What would the best practice be for someone that drove through the mud, water and steam area yesterday?
- Would the council advise people to not drive through the area until it was cleared?
- Any other comments or tips are welcomed.
Subsequent from reporter:
Reporter requested a video interview with Geothermal Inspector Peter Brownbridge
Response
The following information was provided:
Latest update is available on our website here - Fumarole opens up on Lake Road - Rotorua Lakes Council
Regarding your enquiry about vehicles – Peter has advised that best practice, as with driving through any type of road works or mud, would be to wash the car.
Were you still wanting to do a video update with Peter? He did give a verbal update to the Operations & Monitoring Committee today which you can watch here.
NOTE: We did not hear back from the reporter
