Enquiry
I'm looking to do up a preview on the annual Matariki Ride the Night and wondered if there is someone from the Safe and Sustainable Journeys Rotorua that would be able to give a few comments to the below?
- How many people took part in last year's ride? Why do you think this is a fun event for families?
- Why is it important to celebrate both biking and Matariki?
- Why do you think this trail makes for a great ride?
- Are there any messages/reminders to give those thinking of attending the event?
Response
FromCouncil’s Sustainable Journeys Coordinator, Rachel Doelman:
- How many people took part in last year's ride? Why do you think this is a fun event for families? We had about 80 participants last year. It’s a great opportunity for whānau to get out of the house together and connect with nature and other people.
- Why is it important to celebrate both biking and Matariki? Biking is an avenue to bring people together in nature to connect with the elements. Getting out on bikes and embracing the fresh air will hopefully inspire people to create well-being goals for themselves, their friends, and their whānau for the year ahead. Prior to the ride, hot milo will be available while a speaker gives a quick korero about the meaning and significance of Matariki.
- Why do you think this trail makes for a great ride? It is just the right length, not too short and not too long. It’s an accessible trail and suitable for all levels. Participants can choose to ride part-way if they like and leave early if they need to.
- Are there any messages/reminders to give those thinking of attending the event? Dress warmly, be bright by having a good front light on your bike, light up yourself and your bike to shine like the Matariki stars! Children must also be accompanied by caregivers.
