Topic: Kainga Ora tenants' situation
Enquiry
We ran a story today on a concerning Kainga Ora case in Rotorua, in which a young family who has been terrorised by their KO neighbour is now sleeping together in their lounge and the children receiving therapy from a child psychologist due to threats and abuse from a disturbed KO client next door. They have been raising concerns for 14 months with police and KO, and warning that the woman is a danger to herself and the community around her.
National's housing spokesman Chris Bishop says it is an appalling situation. He is asking why KO has not taken action against the tenant to protect neighbours.
I have sought comment from Minister Poto Williams but would also like comment from the mayor.
QUESTIONS:
What is the mayor's reaction to the situation this family find themselves in?
Is she concerned for the safety of this family and neighbouring residents given the threats and abusive behaviour they have endured?
Does she intend to raise this matter with Kainga Ora, police or local health authorities on behalf of her constituents?
Response
Mayor Chadwick provided the following response:
I’m not aware of the details and it certainly appears to be a challenging situation. We want everyone in Rotorua to feel safe and in situations like these it is my expectation that the relevant government agencies and ministers are working together to find a satisfactory resolution and that this is being done with some urgency.
