Topic: Needle disposal in Rotorua
Enquiry
I'm working on an article about needle disposal in Rotorua - I've had a report from a member of the public that their five-year-old nephew picked up a used needle in Kuirau Park a few days ago.
If you could pass on these questions to the most appropriate person, that would be greatly appreciated.
• How many complaints has the council received in the last year about used needles/the improper disposal of needles?
• Is the council aware of any injuries or illnesses caused by used needles in the last year? If so, what was the nature of these injuries or illnesses?
• What actions/programmes does the council run in order to keep public spaces free of needles?
• What dangers do used needles expose to the public?
• How would the council advise caregivers to keep their children safe from used needles/sharp objects when out in public?
Response
From Rob Pitkethley, Manager Sport, Recreation and Environment:
The Customer Centre has no record of any reports relating to needles in the last year.
Council contractors do an inspection of the inner city daily (starting at 3am) and a dedicated parks team do a daily check of all parks and reserves in our community. City guardians also alert InfraCore contractors if they come across anything during their daily patrols.
Anyone who comes across any hazardous materials in public areas should call Council on 07 348 4199 to report the issue immediately so we can send a contractor to remove it as soon as possible.
Reporter was referred to ACC and Toi Te Ora / Medical Officer of Health regarding the health related questions.
