Inquiry
[We] have a few questions about the story below.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/bay-of-plenty/99056510/rotoruas-menz-shed-faces-closure
Why do council need to consider the future of the building?
Does it need to be earthquake strengthened? Is it required to fill the gap by the Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre?
Do council have another tenant lined up for it?
What sort of help did council offer Menz Shed that they declined?
Response
Statement from Rotorua Lakes Council's chief financial officer, Thomas Colle:
Menz Shed has occupied the commercial building, which it sub-leases to Literacy Rotorua and Autism New Zealand, since 2014 under strict conditions including that the lease could be terminated at any time upon six months' notice. Council has made it clear, when renewing the lease with the Menz Shed, that the agreement contains a six month out clause should possession of the building be required by Council at an earlier date. Council is currently reviewing the use and safety of its properties including the former commercial printing building occupied by the Menz Shed. We are currently investigating the future of the building, and as such can't offer a fixed term lease and provide security of tenure to the Menz Shed. Unfortunately, Council has offered the Menz Shed help in finding an alternative premises but it has not accepted our support.
"The Council and the Menz Shed signed a fixed-term agreement in 2014 for a two year lease with the possibility of a renewal for a further two years, which is currently being exercised. Our staff contacted the Menz Shed by phone to suggest an alternative venue but that was declined. Staff are continuing to keep an eye out for any Council properties that are becoming available which may be suitable for the Menz Shed. No decisions have been made about the future use of the Menz Shed building. But, Council plans to inspect the state, use and safety of the building as part of a wider review of all Council buildings."
For your reference, re is it required to fill the gap by the Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre? No
