Inquiry
I'm doing a story on how much rubbish gets dumped and is picked up by local councils in NZ. If the department keeps this kind of information that would be helpful.
-How much money did the council spend on removing illegally dumped rubbish in the last financial year?
-How much rubbish (in tonnes) did councils collect that had been illegally dumped in the last financial year?
Broken down by type of waste if possible. i.e. general, green, asbestos etc
Response
Please find below some background information from Rotorua Lakes Council in response to your inquiry about illegal dumping:
- From October, 2016 - September 2017, Council has organised for about 75 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish to be removed from locations across Rotorua
- Pick up, removal and disposal of that waste has cost Rotorua Lakes Council about $122,000
- The illegal dumped waste includes mattresses, sofas, electronics, construction and green waste as well as household rubbish, recyclables and items suitable for pre-loved stores
