The iconic Bath House building, home to the Rotorua Museum, is a significant building for our community and country. The land on which the Bath House now stands was gifted by Ngāti Whakaue.
The building was once home to a famous spa, offering therapeutic treatments to visitors from all over the world. In November 1969, the City of Rotorua Museum officially opened in South Wing. The Museum closed due to earthquake damage in 2016, with a project currently underway to strengthen and restore the building.
Collections
Prior to closing, the Museum housed several important collections, including:
- Taonga Māori - spiritually and historically significant treasures of Te Arawa
- Fine arts - important early graphic images of New Zealand, historic and contemporary artworks, sculpture, ceramics and craft
- Photographic - over 70,000 images depicting Rotorua's rich past
- Social history - items relating to the Rotorua area since European settlement.
