As Mamaku residents, you will be paying the general rates categories as well as metered water and waste collection targeted rates. The general rates categories are broken down as follows on average (approximately):
- Community Leadership: General Rate – 12% of total rates - Community leadership is about setting the future direction and priorities for the District through good governance, partnerships, community advocacy and informed and inclusive decision making. Our leadership is underpinned by services that support to facilitate the effective and efficient delivery of all Council services.
- Spaces, Places and Recreation: General Rate – 37% of total rates - Spaces, Places and Recreation is about the creation of a sense of place, of building identity and pride. These services bring our people together enhancing activity and promoting the social, and cultural wellbeing of our district. Providing a range of activities and experiences in our district is an expectation from many of what a thriving community should offer. These services connect and engage our community.
- Community Safety: General Rate – 3% of total rates - To ensure people feel safe in public spaces and places through partnerships, visibility and enforcement to support a thriving CBD. Safety is about ensuring Rotorua is a place where people feel safe and are protected from risks to their health and wellbeing. We want to make sure our public places are safe for the people that use them and legal standards are met. We want to meet our legal obligations to keep our residents safe by ensuring compliance with public health and safety regulations.
- Stormwater: General Rate – 6% of total rates - To manage the drainage of excess rainfall so that property and people are protected from flood damage, and to mitigate the adverse effects of stormwater run-off on the District’s lakes and waterways.
- Waste and Sustainability: Mix of targeted and General Rate – 10% of total rates - To provide for the collection, reduction, reuse, recycling, and disposal of waste sustainably
- District Development: Mix of Targeted and General Rate (included business and commercial rates) – 15% of total rates - Growth is about planning that supports growth of the district through both infill and new suburbs while ensuring Rotorua's unique environment is protected. We want to meet our regulatory requirements to ensure building activity in the district supports safe, sustainable housing and commercial solutions in response to Rotorua's growing population. We want to ensure developers, large and small, have accurate advice and information to help them through the regulatory processes.
- Transportation Infrastructure: General rate – 11% of total rates - To provide a safe and efficient transport network that supports the District’s economy provides access for utilities; supports the facilitation of events and other activities; promotes road safety; and encourages the use of other sustainable forms of travel.
- Water: Targeted Rate - 6% of total rates - Protect and promote public health, ensure fire-fighting water supplies are available in specific areas and enable businesses to operate and grow.
Note: The above percentages differ from the attached overall graph because, as there is no charge for sewerage (wastewater) in Mamaku, these costs were removed from the calculation.
