Subject: Official Information request - dogs at the pound
I refer to your request for information of 25 October 2023 regarding dogs at the pound. Your request was processed under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act.
Please find below the information requested as per your email:
- How are dogs euthanised from your pound e.g. at vet by injection, by injection at pound, bolt gun, rifle?
Dogs at the Rotorua Lakes Council pound are euthanised by lethal injection administered by a vet at the pound. - For the last four financial years (2019-2023) please provide the following information on how many dogs exited the pound in those years:
- Total impounded
- Claimed by owners
- Put down
- Re-homed by council/pound provider
- Given to rescue group to re-home
- Given to SPCA to re-home
- Stolen
* Council does not differentiate why a dog is re-homed. Although there have been dogs rehomed to rescue groups this is not captured in Council’s recording system. ** Council moved to a new enterprise management system on 24 May 2023. Due to the switch-over from the previous system to the new system, there are inaccuracies in the data recorded regarding the outcome of the impounded dogs for the period 24 May to 30 June and we cannot provide figures for this period. The figures provided for 2022/2023 are only for the period 1 July 2022 to 23 May 2023.Total impounds Claimed by owners Put down Re-homed by council / pound provider Given to rescue group to re-home Given to SPCA to re-home Stolen 2019/ 2020 1221 694 390 134 * 3 0 2020/ 2021 1118 681 294 141 * 2 0 2021/ 2022 897 511 250 134 * 1 0 2022/ 2023 1044 494 ** 294 ** 80 ** * 0 0
