Topic: Fire safety in boarding houses
Enquiry
Prompted by the boarding house fire in Auckland, could LC pls update RNZ oday on the outcome/s from the inspections it was doing late last year and reported here
Also, MBIE and councils recently reported back on checking 37 boarding houses similar to Loafers Lodge. It surprised me none were in Rotorua. To confirm, you had zero boarding houses similar to Loafers?
Response
We provided the following information:
Re outcome of inspections:
No further action was required by Rotorua Lakes Council regarding Building Act requirements in relation to fire safety.
Re the MBIE report:
We presume you are you referring to this report: Boarding house investigation rpt MBIE 25p March 2024 - DocumentCloud
You will have noted under ‘building scope/criteria’ (p4) that buildings were chosen based on a similar profile to that of Loafers Lodge with the specific requirement that the buildings needed to:
- be a boarding house;
- and have no sprinkler system.
and be three storeys or more in height;
No Rotorua buildings meet the above scope/criteria.

Topic: Illegal dumping in Wrigley Road
Enquiry
Reporter following up on yesterday’s enquiry regarding piles of rubbish on Wrigley Road following a Kainga Ora initiative and clean-up RLC had arranged with its contractor Smart Environmental wanted to know if we had a final tally of cost of the clean-up. We had provided an estimate of $3000 to $4000 yesterday, based on initial visual assessment.
Response
We told the reporter RLC did not yet have a final tally but would let her know once we did.
