Topic: Iwi concerns regarding lakefront development
Enquiry
I'm after some information regarding the proposed lake front redevelopment.
How far along is the process, and what are the next steps? We've been approached by local iwi, who may be misinformed, but have concerns about the size of the project.
They've told 1 News it'll stretch along the perimeter of the lake, but I can only see it stretching 600 metres. Is this correct?
If you could provide some detail and steer me in the right direction that would be appreciated.
RLC sought some further clarification including which iwi was concerned and about what specifically and whether further info/comment would be sought from Council. The reporter responded as follows:
Sorry if my message wasn't clear enough.
Is there going to be a boardwalk around the perimeter of the lake?
Is the lakefront development still going ahead?
And if it is, when will construction start.
ResponseThe following information was providedNo, there is no proposal for a boardwalk around the entire perimeter of the lake. Council's lakefront development project (included in the 2018-28 Long-term Plan that was consulted on last year), includes a proposed 600m long boardwalk adjacent to the lake edge at the lakefront. The boardwalk is subject to resource consent from Bay of Plenty Regional Council as well as permission from Te Arawa Lakes Trust as owner of the lake bed, and permission from LINZ as owner of the Crown-owned stratum. These applications have been prepared and submitted and we are awaiting the outcome of these. The applications include an ecological assessment, a visual impact assessment and a cultural impact assessment which was coordinated for Rotorua Lakes Council by Te Arawa Lakes Trust and included input from mana whenua. The boardwalk is intended to be part of Stage 1 of the redevelopment which also includes work on the lake edge. The tendering process for these works is underway. Final approval for preferred contractors will come from Council (elected members). If you haven't already seen it, you'll find more about the project at THIS LINK on Council's website. Please let us know if there is anything further you need at this stage. Would appreciate knowing if there is to be a story so we can keep an eye out for it.

Topic: Dog attack
Enquiry
Further to enquiry yesterday re dog attack, reporter had the following questions:
- How many dogs have been destroyed because of attacking and how many have been found For this month and this year?
- How many of the dog attacks on people have been found? And where were these reported attacks on people? Was any a child? For this month and this year
- How many dogs have been destroyed, or had an order put in to be destroyed, by Animal Control? For this month and this year
- Is this quite unusual to have this many attacks on people?
- The locations of each of the attacks. Quite interested to know where people were attacked and the livestock was killed.
- Could you also please let me know the other locations of the 96 attacks?
And a comment from dog control about if these attacks are something to be worried about and if this was normal? Average? For number of attacks. 96 seems quite high

The following quote can be attributed to Dylan Wright, Animal Control Team Lead:
"As you can see by the year to year comparison for this period, this year's number of dog attacks is currently tracking lower than previous years.
"However these numbers are still higher than we would like to see which is disappointing.
As we've said previously, the responsibility of preventing dog attacks lies largely with dog owners. Our Animal Control team works hard to prevent attacks where we can through picking up roaming dogs and educating owners, however ultimately it is up to dog owners to ensure their dogs are secured within their properties and are controlled when in public and when interacting with other people and dogs."

Topic: Museum insurance
Enquiry
Given the recent announcement of more funding for the museum I was hoping for an update on where insurance matters are at.
For my information, not for print, is there any update available on where settlement is at?
If not we'll leave it at that, if there is I'll send through some more specific questions.
Response
Reporter was informed that there is no update at this stage.
