Topic: Plastic waste
Enquiry
Reporter had further questions following information provided 28 June:
Figures from Rotorua Lakes Council shows plastic accounts for 38 per cent of overall household waste collected by the council while 30 per cent of household recycling was plastic.
What time frames are these over?
Council had sold 15,928 plastic council rubbish bags this year - about how many did council sell in 2018 - and how much are the bags?
Could I get the number of rubbish bags sold in 2017 as well?
Plus I am not that familiar with how the recycling works in Rotorua how many bins does a house get and what are they for?
Response
The following information was provided: Cost: $1.70 per bag (inclusive of GST) 45,398 bags sold in 2018 2017: 21,454 sold (some residents were using up brown paper bags they still had from before the new waste collection system was introduced in October 2016. That introduced wheelie bins and kerbside recycling + added some rural areas not previously serviced by waste collection services). All urban and some rural areas have bins (one bin for general waste that goes to landfill, a larger bin for recyclables + a crate for glass). Bags are used by residents in the rural and lakes areas which are serviced but where they are unable to have bins. There are transfer stations at Mamaku (rural), Reporoa (rural), Okere Falls (lakes/rural) and Tarawera (lakes) which provide rubbish and recycling facilities and there is a recycling centre in the city. Info about the bins and what can be placed in them can be found HERE on Council's website. |
