Topic: Restaurants opening and closing in Rotorua
Inquiry
Could I get some figures from you around the number of eateries in Rotorua as of Jan 2017 and the number of eateries in Jan 2015 and Jan 16.
As well could I have the number of those that opened and closed (as well as names if possible) over the last three years.
Further questions:
How many were registered in Jan 2015 and jan 2016? And just to clarify when you say you don't have stats on specific opening and closing dates, do you have a number that closed each year between 2015 and 2016?
Response
Rotorua currently has 410 registered eateries. Unfortunately they do not have stats on specific opening and closing dates.
Rotorua currently has 410 registered eateries with eight new food businesses registered since April 2016. Our system does not detail information about business closures as it's common for a license to be transferred to a new owner rather than it being cancelled.
Further information:
Since 1 April 2016 we have had 8 new food businesses registered (not limited to eateries).
In terms of closed businesses, we have a number of premises that close and open with new owners and more often than not the registration is transferred to a new owner and not cancelled. There are also those businesses that just close the doors.

Topic: Rotorua Chinese Community of Commerce
Inquiry
Mayor Steve Chadwick was asked for a brief comment regarding Rotorua's Chinese Community of Commerce and what the group adds to Rotorua.
Bay of Plenty News also approached Rotorua Chambe of Commerce.
Response
Rotorua's Chinese community contributes widely to the district including through the business and creative experience of its members and has established a positive relationship with Rotorua Lakes Council. We fully support diverse communities which are driven to create their own destiny and are contributing to the wider community and the local economy and we've seen this happening through the establishment of the Chinese Community of Commerce which was a very positive step forward for our Chinese community.
