Topic: Council involvement in Crankworx Rotorua

I am working on a large scale Crankworx story today in regard to the effect it has on the city and was hoping to get some questions away to you:
- How vital does the council feel an event at the scale of Crankworx is for the local economy?
- What sort of measures are going to be put in place to manage the influx of people to the city, specifically in the Skyline area?
- Do council staff get involved with the event at all? If so, in what circumstances?
- Are there any other comments you'd wish to make on this topic?
NOTE: Destination Rotorua, Council's economic development CCO, was also asked for comment/information relating to Crankworx

As per my email yesterday Destination Rotorua will be able to assist with your question around benefits of large events and your second question should be referred to the organisers (Ari Tibble).
From Council's Operations Group Manager Jocelyn Mikaere:
This is a key event for Rotorua and Council is providing a range of support to ensure its success - as it does with other major events that come here.
This year council is providing $75K of funding to the event and is operating in a facilitator role to help streamline a range of functions including (see listed below):
- Facilitating road closures/management of local roads;
- Event communications and promotions;
- Community engagement including delivery of flyers to residents near the main venue;
- Assistance with concessions for Crankworx events being held in the forest;
- Food and beverage compliance;
- Building consents (marquee erection and scaffolding); From Destination Rotorua: Crankworx is a significant contributor to Rotorua's events economy and is a great way of showcasing how our natural environment offers a year-round destination for adventure activities. The event brings thousands of competitors, supporters and other audience members into Rotorua who stay in local accommodation and eat in restaurants and cafes while they are here. Our role at Destination Rotorua is to leverage the event by helping to promote the wealth of activities and attractions for visitors to experience alongside the Crankworx action.The broadcasting of the event also ensures that the beauty of this district is shared with many millions of event followers around the globe, and the new deal with Redbull TV will increase that audience considerably.

Reporter sought clarification on figures provided in original response: And as for my other question, "That $257,660 - is that the budget or the actual spend? If the actual spend, is that just for the 2019/2020 YTD?"

We can confirm the number $257,660 is actual spend on bill of quantities (so that is the regularly scheduled works such as annual flower beds etc) for 2019/2020 YTD.

This specified amount is for work that is regularly scheduled e.g. mowing, weeding, shrub pruning etc. This does not include on-demand work such as restoring a patch of garden that has been damaged by vandalism. These other requirements are paid for as necessary and this amount varies each year depending on damage.
Examples of regular gardening work in the CBD:
- Annual garden beds (replacement and maintenance)
- Gardens - roses (replacement and maintenance)
- Garden - shrubs (replacement and maintenance)
