Inquiry
Rotorua Daily Post contacted us saying there had been a two-car crash on the Tarawera Rd outside the Buried Village and the people at the attraction said they had been asking Council to reduce the speed limit there. The reporter wanted to inquire whether council was doing anything about the speed limit there
Response
From Rotorua Lakes Council water, transport and waste director Stavros Michael:
Three-yearly speed limit reviews are currently underway with a list of roads and streets being assessed, including the stretch of road from Tikitapu to The Landing at Tarawera.
There is quite a bit of work involved in assessing whether a speed limit should be changed including measuring the average actual speed and then, as per NZTA guidelines, taking a raft of factors into account, including practicality of enforcement.
We are working through a list of roads and streets which we've either received submissions about from people or which we've noted as a result of crash statistics.
Once the evaluations are completed we will develop recommendations for Council to consider.
