Enquiry
A reporter from Maori TV requested an on air interview with Mayor Chadwick regarding the announcement of Rotoma No 1 Incorporation's $80m commercial and hotel development in the CBD. The development will be a multi-million dollar wood first' Māori commercial centre and a neighbouring Māori-centric, 174 room hotel with 120 locals to be employed on completion.
Response
Key points made by the mayor:
- Fantastic news - a significant investment
- Will contribute to local economy and create jobs
- Will also contribute to ongoing efforts to revitalise CBD
- Shows confidence in Rotorua and strength and importance of local Maori economy to produce positive outcomes for our community
- Te Arawa showing leadership re investing in Rotorua's future - for the benefit of all
- Other Maori entities also investing - eg Pukeroa Oruawhata in lakefront spa development and Maori trusts investing in housing developments
- Being "Maori-centric", expect the hotel will add further to Rotorua's well-known reputation for manaakitanga
- Another hotel development is also underway in CBD and these hotels will fill a need we have for high quality hotels
