Kaupapa Māori has been a catalyst in building positive relationships between Council, tangata whenua and Māori.
Kaupapa Māori:
- provides an interface with Māori communities, organisations and individuals, marae, runanga, iwi, hapū and whānau
- designs and develops Māori cultural training for staff and other external organisations
- contributes and implements appropriate Māori tikanga (protocols) for local, national and international visitors and dignitaries
- provides Māori protocol, translations and historical advice or sources of information for Council management and staff, and for elected members
- develops methods to provide opportunities for Māori to participate in local government decision-making.
