Emergency Management in Rotorua
Rotorua Lakes Council is part of the Bay of Plenty Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group.
The group is made up of Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Kawerau District Council, Ōpōtiki District Council, Rotorua Lakes Council, Tauranga City Council, Western Bay District Council and Whakatāne District Council.
We work with emergency services, lifeline utility companies and other governement agencies to manage the "4 Rs" of emergency management:
Reduction | Taking steps to reduce the impact of a natural hazard event |
---|---|
Readiness | Helping communities and statutory agencies prepare for civil emergencies |
Response | Coordinating the response to an emergency event caused by a natural hazard, such as severe weather or an earthquake |
Recovery | Helping communites recover from an emergency event. |
In an emergency, we're all in
If an emergency event happens, all Council staff have been trained to step in and help out.
Rotorua Lakes Council also employs two full-time staff who are tasked to lead and support all Civil Defence and Emergency Management initiatives within the Rotorua area.
Their roles include:
- Training other Council staff to help in an emergency response. This includes running mock emergency scenarios to help staff prepare
- Helping communities understand how they can prepare for an emergency event
- Ensuring that Council has all the resources they need to activate an Emergency Operations Centre should an emergency occur.
This includes maintaining strong relationships with partner agencies such as police, FENZ and ambulance services.
Community emergency hubs
A community emergency hub is a place for the people of a suburb or small community to meet and coordinate the effort to help one other during and after a disaster.
In an emergency, we will open several emergency hubs around the district, where it's possible to do so. Check here or on our social media channels for details in the event of an emergency.
Plans and reports
The Bay of Plenty Emergency Management Group Plan outlines how all of the members of the Bay of Plenty CDEM Group will work collaboratively to support one another in the event of an emergency.
The Group Plan also provides an overview of the governance of the Bay of Plenty CDEM Group and how the Group intends to help communities prepare for emergencies (readiness) and support communities when an emergency occurs (response).
