Are You Prepared?
Emergency plan and survival kits
It's important to be prepared for an emergency because you never know when it's going to happen or where you or members of your family will be when it occurs. Anyone of your family or you could be at home, work, school or pre-school or a childcare centre.
If a disaster happened right now:
- Do you know where your family members are?
- Do you have a plan detailing where you will all meet?
- Would you have enough food and water available to get you through at least three days?
Where will you be?
At home
Having a family or household emergency plan is essential as it helps alleviate fears about potential disasters, and can help you respond safely and quickly when a disaster hit
- Get together with your family or members of your household and agree on a household emergency plan.
In most emergencies you should be able to stay at home. So, ensure you have enough supplies to last at least three days or more by assembling and maintaining emergency survival items for your house and a portable get away kit.
You can find some helpful tips for your household to work out what supplies you need.
At work
- Think about keeping essential items such as sturdy walking shoes, waterproof jacket, torch, food and water there
- If you're in charge, encourage your staff to have some essential items
- Businesses have a responsibility to be prepared for an emergency under the Health and Safety Employment Act.
- Use these resilience tools to become a more resilient business.
At school
The educational tool, What's the Plan Stan, is designed for Primary and Intermediate aged children and will help them prepare for disasters such as earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions, which can be frightening for them.
At preschool/childcare centre
Stan the dog has some useful information for pre-schoolers, which have been created to teach them what to do if they are inside or outdoors when an earthquake happens.
